Rare Disease Day 2026

Rare Disease Day 2026

On the 28th of February 2026 we celebrate the 19th Rare Disease Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about rare diseases and their impact on the lives of those affected, including approximately 30,000 people in Luxembourg.

As every year, ALAN Maladies Rares Luxembourg, the non-profit organisation and national alliance representing people affected by a rare disease in the Grand Duchy, will launch several actions to increase awareness and understanding for these diseases, most of which are chronic, progressive and incurable.

A big THANK YOU to all our partners who supported our awareness-raising campaign for Rare Disease Day 2026!

“Rare Voices”: celebrating the resilience of the rare disease community

For Rare Disease Day, ALAN is hosting “Rare Voices”, an event that gives a voice and stage to people affected by a rare disease. Through creative writing, Nathalie Scheer, Jean‑Francis Covi, Lara Post, Samuel Coljon, Carine Hentz, Hannah Hommel, Corinne Thill and Benny Michaels explore the theme of resilience and create space for connection and empathy.

The event will take place on 27th of February 2026 in the presence of the Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez, with the generous support of the Rotary Club Schengen‑Mondorf‑les‑Bains and Schroeder & Associés SA.

The poems, short stories, children’s stories and theater scenes presented during the evening will later become the central element of the online awareness campaign. So, don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok so you don’t miss the videos.

The Global Chain of Lights

As in previous years, a highlight of Rare Disease Day is the “Global Chain of Lights” – the illumination of public, or iconic buildings and monuments around the world in the Rare Disease Day colours. The purpose of this illumination is to break the isolation of people affected by a rare disease, to express our solidarity and to raise awareness.

For the “Global Chain of Lights” in Luxembourg, many prestigious buildings are illuminated in blue, pink, green and purple throughout the last week of February 2026, including:

  • The Central Bank of Luxembourg
  • The Spuerkeess headquarters
  • The Belval blast furnaces
