good intentions aren't always good
In autumn 2026 the non-profit organisation ALAN – Maladies Rares Luxembourg launched a new online awareness campaign: “Well Meant”. Through a series of 9 short videos and a thought-provoking approach, the campaign aims to foster understanding and empathy for both visible and invisible disabilities.
People living with a rare disease often hear advice from friends, acquaintances, and even strangers that is meant kindly but inappropriate. “Well Meant” shines a light on the gap between someone’s good intention, their words, and what actual helps the other person. Not every comment featured in this campaign comes from the same place: some are genuinely well-intentioned, offered by people who simply don’t know better; others carry a quieter judgment, the kind that questions rather than supports. What they share is the lack of understanding of what living with a rare disease is actually like.
The campaign is built from real comments collected directly from the rare disease community, paired with the simple, human response that would have made a genuine difference instead. No single video tells one person’s story — together, they represent a shared experience, carried across many different voices.
